The Creighton Area Chamber of Commerce has announced plans for an addition to SantaLand.

SantaLand Christmas displays attract thousands of visitors to Creighton each year, according to chamber officials.

Visitors travel from across Nebraska, and beyond, to visit SantaLand and Santa’s workshop.

“It is a natural gathering place for children, families and out-of-town visitors,” said SantaLand Committee member Sherrie Zimmerer.

As visitor numbers continue to increase, the Chamber and the SantaLand Committee have begun plans to add a 30x30-foot gingerbread house to the north side of the workshop building.

Inspiration for the new feature came from two young members of the community, Creighton High School freshman, Olivia Dartman, and her seventh-grade sister, Mia.

As their dad, Mike Dartman, discussed building a new shadow box display for SantaLand with another committee member, Tom Gragert, the Dartman sisters said, “Dad, we need something fun - like a gingerbread house.”

Their dad and Gragert took the idea to a SantaLand Committee meeting. Zimmerer said members felt it was an opportunity to add a fun new attraction - and at the same time - fill an ever increasing need for more space at the workshop as visitor numbers climb.

The committee plans a traditional gingerbread house decor for the interior, with the space to be used for serving refreshments and children’s activities.

“The new gingerbread house will be a fun and engaging place for children and families to experience all that SantaLand has to offer,” said Zimmerer.

The committee hopes to build on many family traditions that have started at SantaLand and continue to create memories for Creighton visitors.

“In a time (when) small rural communities are struggling to be viable and attractive, projects like this make a statement that Creighton will be here for many years to come,” Zimmerer said. “It is our hope that this new attraction will continue to bring more people to Creighton to visit SantaLand, plus see what our community has to offer. SantaLand is an asset to our community and one we are proud to have.”

With a goal for completion in time for SantaLand’s 2019 opening night, the chamber has begun the process to obtain grants to fund the new feature. A capital campaign has been initiated to raise matching funds for those potential grants. The goal is to raise $30,000 in private donations by March 31.

“We feel this will be a one-of-a-kind feature in Northeast Nebraska and we want you to have the chance to be a part of it,” committee members said.

Donations may be made at Midwest Bank in Creighton or mailed to The Creighton Chamber Area of Commerce, PO Box 502, Creighton, NE 68729. Checks should be made payable to the City of Creighton – Gingerbread House.

Questions may be addressed to SantaLand Committee members, Mike Zerbe (402-841-3883), Andrea Eggerling (402-358-0286), Mike Dartman (402-360-1943), Andy Jueden (402-640-8288), Trisha Moser (402-394-1214) or Zimmerer (402-841-6217).
