He died Friday, May 10, 2013, at Avera Creighton Care Centre in Creighton.
Frank George “Fritz” Bartos, son of Frank and Anna S. (Kreycik) Bartos, was born Sept. 26, 1921, at Knoxville. He attended Knoxville Country School through the eighth grade. During his teen years, Fritz, his brother, Emil, and sister, Rosalie, were active in 4-H, raising and showing Angus baby beef cattle.
Frank married Alma H. Kotrous on June 5, 1945, in Verdigre. The couple was blessed with seven children, Judi, Francine, Kenneth, Rodney, Bruce, Ricky and Frank. Fritz and Alma raised their family on a farm west of Verdigre, between Jelen and Knoxville, where they were cattle feeders. They were hard workers, and they built up a sizeable farming and cattle feeding operation during their lifetime.
Fritz was always on the cutting edge when it came to modern farming methods, and was one of the first farmers in the area to utilize center pivot irrigation. His reputation for quality cattle, dating back to his early years in 4-H, made Fritz well known throughout northeast Nebraska. He continued to farm well into his late 80’s, remaining on the farm after Alma’s death on June 28, 2002. In recent years, Fritz lived in Creighton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Alma H. Bartos; a son, Rick Bartos (on Jan. 6, 2013); a grandson, Richard Bartos (on Aug. 1, 2008); a brother, Emil Bartos (on March 7, 1991); and a sister, Rosalie Bartos Mashek (on Jan. 9, 2013).
Fritz’s life and legacy lives on in his family, which includes his children, Judi (husband Roger) Bingen of Columbus, Fran (husband Charles) Kucera of Verdigre, Kenny (wife LuAnn) Bartos of Tilden, Rodney (wife Jane) Bartos of Verdigre, Bruce (wife Theresa) Bartos of Hastings and Frank (wife Joyce) Bartos of Michigan; a daughter-in-law, Patty Bartos of Creighton; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Leanore Bartos of Verdigre; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends.
